The Class 170 DMU units were constructed by ADtranz/Bombardier Transportation between 1998 and 2005 for passenger duties. Nicknamed the "Turbostar" these units could hit a maximum speed of 100mph and could be used in either 2 or 3 car consists. 139 sets were constructed between 1998 and 2005 sme of which were converted into class 168 and class 171 units.
